Bling Bling flying across Cloudlake

Tacking again!

This week our good friends/guests Paul and Clare from Hervey Bay stayed with us again at Cloudlake on their return from a very successful National A Class Catamaran Championships at Lake Macquarie in N.S.W. They of course had with them their very fast, sleek and beautiful cats, Bling Bling and Mrs. Bling and Paul could not resist the temptation for one last sail before returning to work - on Cloudlake!!!

It was indeed a beautiful day and without too much effort, this very fast indeed boat was flying around Cloudlake - quite an amazing and wonderful sight - thank you Paul - we know you enjoyed it as much as we did. Perhaps next time you could try the bigger lake, Lake Cressbrook, only ten minutes drive down the road and now sporting much more water.

In the meantime, the sight of Bling Bling on Cloudlake will make us smile for some time indeed. Hope you enjoy the pics.

SUMMER TIME AND THE LIVING IS EASY!

HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

January 10th and it could not be more different than one year ago. First of all our thoughts are extended to everyone who was affected.

This Summer however has been lovely, the abundance of rain earlier means that everything is green and lush; all the trees are brimful of blossom.

The lake is so inviting for a swim( cool but not too cool) and relaxing and refreshing i.e. you don't feel sticky when you get out of the water. Even a late afternoon paddle in the canoe, checking out the waterlilies and idling around a little longer before starting to think about what delicious salad to try with the barbecue. Perhaps just sitting on the verandahs, with a glass of something long and chilled in hand, regarding the water is all you need to feel refreshed

So far, it is like Summers of old - so if you are looking for a hillstation (or Mountain Retreat) to escape to - come on up to Cloudlake.

To make it even more relaxing, we are offering three nights for the price of two.

NOVEMBER LILIES

November just would not be November without these gorgeous beauties - so lovely, so fragrant and amazingly right on time!! Unlike almost everything else in the garden which is about four weeks behind Brisbane - caused I guess by our location at 2100 feet up in the mountains. The Jacarandas are just beginning to flower now and the Agapanthus will be stunning for Christmas.

SUNFLOWERS

Our little grandson, Thom, recently turned one and we tried to grow some sunflowers to help him celebrate at his Mexican Fiesta party. Not having any sunflower seeds, well no packet seeds, we picked a few out of the Wild Bird Mix we feed to our gorgeous King Parrots and planted them in the Wintergarden. About four germinated and grew and grew but didn't quite make it to flowering for the party BUT just look at them now - we have never seen Sunflowers quite like them - a large terminal floret and multiple florets in all the nodes - just gorgeous - so this blog is for Thom - here they are at last.

p.s. All those flooding rains we had earlier this year are now reaping some fabulous benefits - the gardens are amazing - everything is soo healthy, green and flowering and fruiting wonderfully - nothing like a really deep drink.

SPRINGTIME AT CLOUDLAKE - JUST LOVELY!!

It is sometime now, perhaps four years since we had a breeding year with our Wiltshire Sheep but somewhat late in the season we decided to purchase a new ram to breed with some of our favourite English Heritage Wiltshire Horn Girls. The ram is also an English Heritage breed, indeed the first sheep breed apparently to be brought into Australia - a Southdown. About 4 weeks ago, that wonderful symbol of Springtime happened and we have six new lambs gambolling around as only lambs can - such a joy to watch - one could waste hours, they are so cute so I thought you might like to meet some of them.

It was lovely to see them again and to introduce them to Dudley (he wasn't here then).

HAMPTON TO ESK ROAD IS OPEN!!!

The 10th January 2011 is a day that everyone in South East Queensland will remember for some time.
Just one of the results of that VERY WET DAY was the closing of our road, the Hampton to Esk Road due to a very large hole, rockfalls and a missing bridge.
However, since that day, men in luminous orange shirts have been hard at work and as of last Friday 25th Feb, it is now open, with a couple of small detours.
We are very happy about this as now our guests can continue to drive to Ravensbourne via the Brisbane Valley Way over the dam wall of Wivenhoe up through the valley to Esk, and finally climbing the range through the beautiful Deongwar Forest.
So a big thanks to all the chaps and girls from Main Roads, Toowoomba Regional Council et al

TIME NOW TO REFRESH AND HEAL

It's now three weeks or so since the VERY RAINY MONDAY and life is almost back to normal - really the issue of access via the Hampton Esk Road has yet to be resolved but Main Roads are on the case and we believe that it will be open very soon indeed. In the meantime, access is available via Toowoomba (great opportunity to check out our beautiful mountain city with its shady tree lined streets - great cafes and restaurants and so tempting antique shops) or Murphy's Creek.

Amazingly tiny palm seedlings are sprouting in the rainforest and are coming up like grass!! Mother Nature can certainly shake her bangles as in Cyclone Yasi and the wild floody weather in the South East and tell who really is boss but she can also be a nurturer and carer when she wants to as well thank goodness. (Richard's newest sculpture in the rainforest )

After such a momentous start to 2011, perhaps it is time to schedule in some real time together this year - time to chat, chill out and share some good times. We know we can provide such an opportunity here at Cloudlake and hope to see you again and for newcomers for the first time- in the meantime, take care in this last month of Summer - LOOKING FORWARD TO AUTUMN!!!

FLOODS IN THE MOUNTAINS!!

First of all thank you to all the caring people, including previous guests from Scotland and Cyprus as well as Aussies, who contacted us to see if we were ok and we are happy to tell everyone that yes, we and all the animals are fine and the houses are high and dry!! The lake is absolutely brimful and not quite its usual blue/green clarity but in a little while it will be again.

The rain over the weekend culminating in Monday's torrential downpour, i.e. 608mm in a week which is about half our annual rainfall meant that for about two days beautiful benign little Oakey Creek became a swollen rushing torrent and 3 of the 4 crossings are going to need lots of work but Nature is an amazing healer and we know that in a very short time, you will not know anything happened. The photo was taken 24 hours later!!

However this post is really to send our heartfelt thoughts and best wishes to all those who have been flooded, some of whom are previous guests. We wish you well and hope that the damage and loss is not too great. As a recent devotee of yoga, I will now be beginning the day with sun salutations, as sun is what we need right now.

We always just love this time of year - all the baby birds in their nests, fresh green leaves on all the deciduous trees in fact Spring rising but the highlight of this time of year is THE ROSE ARBOR. It is only really for about a month from now but to see and smell Albertine, Alberic Barbier, May Queen, Cecille Brunner and Carabella in all their glory still stops me in my tracks. So if you love ROSES you have a little window of opportunity to make the pilgrimage and see them. By the way, we would love to see you and have you stay, either for the first time or once again for our many return guests.

FOREST GIANTS AT CLOUDLAKE

Recently, the Toowoomba Chronicle had a story about some huge trees in the region which are listed on the National Register of Big Trees. http://www.thechronicle.com.au/story/2010/05/06/tree-register-grows-to-include-city-giants/. We are delighted to share that two of these magnificent giants are right here at Cloudlake. One is a Sydney Blue Gum Eucalyptus salignus, shown here and the other is a Tallowwood, Eucalyptus microcorys and even if we walked over to see them everyday, they would fill you with wonder. Forestry people have estimated that they might be 500 years old so what tales they could tell. Their heads of course rise right up above the canopy of the forest so we can see them at all times but it is not until you stand at their bases and even give them a hug (though it takes 7 adults to do that!) that you realize just how wonderful they are. If you love big trees, you must come up and visit them yourself.

PARADISE FOR OUR FEATHERED FRIENDS

Twenty years ago when we first became the stewards of Cloudlake, the very first bird we saw as we inspected the property with the real estate agent was a Wonga Pigeon.
It was an exciting and unforgettable experience and we realized that there were already quite a few feathered and other inhabitants already living here with which we would be sharing our home.

We started making a list, as did many of the guests who came to stay and perhaps because we have a permanent water source - the creek and the lake and perhaps because there are very few predators, such as eagles, pythons and dingoes, the numbers of birds seems to ever increase both in numbers and diversity and we now have 96 on our list but we think there are probably many more which we have not yet managed to either see or hear so we would love to have more birders stay here to add to our list. We do provide binoculars and bird reference books in each house but we know from meeting many of you that you usually bring your own.

I am including a lovely photo of a king parrot taken by Jay last Christmas - these guys are so tame - they love to drop by for a chat. So, if you fancy a relaxing time, lounging on the verandah or deck overlooking the lake, with a morning or afternoon ramble around the rainforest or over to the National Park just send me an email at cloudlake@bigpond.com and I will see when I can fit you in. We love meeting new birders.

Cathedral Drive - A Hope it survives

One of the most memorable experiences when you come to the High Country is to drive along the stretch of the New England Highway between Geham and Hampton, a stretch fondly known as Cathedral Drive taking its name from the cathedral like effect by the blending of an avenue of towering gums and the stained-glass window effect of sunlight streaming through the canopy.

Well, hopefully this Drive will survive as Qld Main Roads is currently ready to undertake road works which will require the removal of 1400 of the trees as you can see in the photo above. They do have other options which would improve the also important safety aspects of the road and we have formed a group called S.A.V.E. A Save Avenue of Vegetation for Everyone in attempt to bring about a different outcome. Have a look at our blog www.cathedraldrive.wordpress.com and please help however you feel you can.

We hope that commonsense will prevail and that Cathedral Drive can still be retained whilst improving safety so that when you are next driving around in the wonderful part of the world, you can still enjoy the magic experience.

AUTUMN SPECIALS

Autumn is such a lovely time to come to the mountains
and here at Cloudlake, it really looks like Autumn with
the Persimmons, Pecans, Lagerstroemia, Maples,Jacarandas
and Pears all turning colour and then falling to create drifts
of leaves to kick up.

It is also a wonderful time to curl up in front of the fire
with a good book/friend/lover/glass of wine and take
time to remember who you are and what is really important.

We think you might also like an extra sleep-in and therefore
for the rest of Autumn, well until the end of June, we will give you three nights for the same tariff as two. (except for the Queens Birthday
weekend and we still have a vacancy for Mother of Ducks for this.)

The Opening of the Art Show happens on Saturday night - a
festive dress up affair, showcasing the artistic talent of a

SUMMER AT CLOUDLAKE IN THE MOUNTAINS

Hi everyone!! Wow here we are at the beginning of 2009 -
let's all make it a wonderful memorable year and let's all try to
do a little better in caring for this fabulous planet we live on.

Because we get lots of enquiries about the differences between staying in The Boathouse and Mother of Ducks Cottage, we thought we might help with a bit more info.

The Boathouse Perfect for two, (although there is also a double futon in the sleeping loft, accessed by a ship's ladder) The Boathouse is a contemporary classic boaty type house with the whole of the front wall/bifold doors opening up onto the deck overlooking the lake. It has a small gas bbq on this deck as well as a full kitchen inside. Beside the house is a campfire, perfect for dreamers, star gazers and marshmallow toasters. We have recently added a telescope, also terrestrial, for nature lovers and star gazers. If you haven't tried The Boathouse before and you love things nautical, this house is for you!!

Mother of Ducks Cottage
This fabulous 100 year old cottage we relocated from Ipswich is just perfect for families or larger groups. French doors from the Green Bedroom and the Living Room open onto the wrap around verandah overlooking the lake and pond. Needless to say, our seven pet ducks love this house and come up to say hello at the back door - don't let them in though! Mother of Ducks has both a full kitchen inside with even a dishwasher as well as an outdoor kitchen pavilion with large bbq. Hammocks and daybeds on the verandah for relaxing and an original recordplayer and vinyls as well as walls covered with original artworks make for a really comfortable and fun stay. Mother of Ducks is surrounded by edible trees, mulberries, loquats, pears, olives and kiwi fruit vines so if you are here when they are fruiting you don't need to walk far for a snack.

we two, the dogs, Tehya and Dudley, Foxie Loxie, sheep,
ducks, guinea fowl, hens, worms and now fish!! -
We're growing Silver Perch as part of our new closed-loop Aquaculture
project. In fact 2008 has been exciting in that a couple of long planned
projects have reached fruition - the new organic vineyard
in the north paddock and since last week, we are
helping to generate power!!!
The rains at last have come this year and the country
is soft and green, the animals fat and the trees productive and bountiful -
for all of that we can only be grateful
Our wish for you is that your little haven, wherever it may be
provides a happy and joy filled Christmas and New Year.
To those of you who have been to Cloudlake before,
we look forward to seeing you up here in the High Country again
and to those whom we have not yet met,

SPRING IS IN THE AIR!!

As soon as September dawned, it really felt like Spring this year - the garden is all purple with wisteria, lavender, echiums everywhere.

The farmyard is full of new lambs and new Gingerbread girl chookies, just the best layers - each day a basket of beautiful brown rainforest free range eggs.

and the birds, they are everywhere, singing, mating, making nests - I tell you Spring is in the air! The vege garden is also burgeoning and is full of greens - wonderful spinach, silver beet and rainbow swiss chard and the avocadoes are now just perfect - oils wonderfully rich so come on up and stay awhile in a Spring garden. We look forward to seeing you soon. (and don't forget next month is October, the month when the fireflies appear on dusk in the rainforest)

TAKE A WALK DOWN AN HISTORIC TRAIL

Well over a hundred year ago there was another road through Ravensbourne to Esk and it was what is now Tessman Road (well Lane really!) , in fact our driveway into Cloudlake. For those of you who have stayed previously you will have seen the remains of the old bridge over Oakey Creek. (We plan to replace a pedestrian bridge over the creek using the old bearers in the future).

But the exciting new thing is that we now have opened up the eastern end of Tessman Lane through to the Esk Road, enabling easy access to Sketches Cafe for a coffee or lunch and also to the tennis courts, picnic ground and Ravensbourne National Park. Assistance from the Department of Natural Resources and the wonderful work of Brett Dreier and Geoff Brumpton
helping us has created a lovely shady ramble up the lane. You can really imagine the olden days with horses and carts carrying families in their very best off to church.

One very exciting find during the work is a Satin Bower Bird's bower - you can see how very busy he has been - we're looking forward to keeping a very discrete eye on it next Spring!

So lots more opportunities for walking now at Cloudlake both within and further afield to explore Ravensbourne. The walking tracks within Cloudlake are now lovely green swards of mown grass now that Richard has his new mower, "Rufus the Magnificent" so we look forward to seeing you here soon now that the cooler weather has arrived and walking through the Ravensbourne forests is such a great way to spend the day.

You have to love your children when they turn out to be talented, innovative and entrepreneurial!! Our daughter, Madeleine, mother of our two beautiful grand daughters, Amelia and Sophie, has begun her own little business whilst she is still at home with the little girls. The business is called "Cute as a Little Button" and in located on the website,
www.wahmania.com.au (Work At Home Mums). She is making gorgeously decorated summer clothes for littlies (which might just be the Christmas present you have been looking for) so check it out and let me know what you think.
Summer tomorrow - what a wonderful Spring we have had - 140mm of rain, beautiful weather and such cool nights. I am sure Summer is going to be fabulous as well. Hoping to see some of you soon - perhaps after Christmas.

GREEN AS GREEN

Summer is just around the corner and after the recent rains, Ravensbourne is looking just like it should at this time of the year - green as green. But we haven't really had enough rain yet to get the creeks flowing or to fill the dams so everyone is hoping for a traditional Summer. So far it is shaping up like last year with the breezes from the east, it is wonderfully cool by day and gorgeous at night - blankets and doonas still needed to snuggle up into. So when it is starting to get just too sticky down on the coast, come on up and bring a cardy!! See you soon

Fireflies in October

I have been hesitant to tell you all but it's true they are back - even if only for a short while - the fireflies come out to do their magic dance just as it goes dark in the rainforest, especially near the Red Shed. Those of you who have been before will know where that is. This is the closest you will ever come to fairies and it is impossible to photograph so do come and see for yourself - it will only be for the next few weeks and then we will have to wait until October 2008.

Magnificent Spring weather - all of the Red Cedars in the rainforest have donned their scarlet leaves revealing how many there are. so dotted throughout the green,their red leaves welcome the Spring. and speaking of Spring our first lamb, a boy, has arrived to Vera, one of the Wiltshire Longhorn ewes. Small breeding cycle this year - only 3 ewes to our new ram Montoni so exciting times.
